Friday night's series-opener against Angelo State University on the road resulted in a 5-2 loss for the University of the Incarnate Word baseball team.
The Cardinals (7-9 overall, 2-3 in the Lone Star Conference) were held to eight hits against the Rams, while the home team had 11 hits.
UIW led, 1-0 after the sixth inning and then pushed their lead to 2-0 in the top of the 8th, but ASU scored five runs in the bottom of the same inning for a 5-2 lead that the Cardinals could not bounce back from.
ASU had six of their 11 hits in the inning.
Incarnate Word's Dylan Boss started the game and pitched six shutout innings – giving up five hits, but striking out six opponents and allowing no runs against – before the Rams were able to do damage against the Cardinal bullpen for the comeback win.
Hector Flores, Adam Pena and Slade Brown all had two hits in the game.
UIW and ASU will play a doubleheader of seven-inning games on Saturday and a single nine-inning game on Sunday in the weekend series. Saturday's doubleheader starts at 4 p.m.
