CARDS, JAGS SPLIT ON SATURDAY

Greg Barbaro hit a double and scored a run in the 5th of game one on Saturday to help give UIW a 4-2 victory.

Saturday's doubleheader at Sullivan Field was split between the visiting University of Houston-Victoria Jaguars and the Incarnate Word baseball team, with UIW taking game on, 4-2, and UHV getting the win in game two, 6-2.

The split puts Incarnate Word's overall record at 3-4.

The Cardinals took game one thanks to a 2-run fifth inning that unknotted the 2-2 score. Things started off with a lead-off triple by designated hitter John Zule. Zule, who went 1-for-2 with two walks, would then score on a pass-ball to put UIW up, 3-2. Later in the inning, catcher Greg Barbaro hit a double down the leftfield line and then score on a single by Jordan Littlefield hit out into centerfield.

Those two runs gave UIW the 4-2 lead and got starting pitcher Kirk Jewasko out of a no decision-situation, and he responded by shutting down the Jaguars in the 6th inning, setting up a 7th-inning appearance by Dylan Boss to close for the Cardinals.

Boss earned his second save of the season by striking out two and getting the fourth batter he faced to pop up to the infield and secure the UIW victory.

Jewasko improved to 1-1 on the season in three starts.

In game two, the Cardinals dug themselves a 6-0 hole in the first three innings thanks to six combined errors by UIW.

In the fourth inning, Keith Vasquez came in to change things up on the mound for UIW (although it should be noted that only 1 of the UHV runs scored in the first three innings was earned) and the Incarnate Word defense tightened things up, committing no more mistakes, and Vasquez allowed just one hit and struck out five Jaguars in three innings of work.

At the plate, meanwhile, UIW was only able to manage four hits and left six men on base while striking out five times as a team.

The Cardinals managed to score runs in the sixth and seventh innings – with Adam Pena scoring thanks to a Littlefield triple in the 6th; and Ryan Flowers getting a leadoff walk, stealing 2nd and scoring on a pass-ball in the 7th – to prevent the shutout.

UIW will be in Laredo on March 2nd-3rd for a three-game series against Texas A&M International University before playing at Wolff Stadium in San Antonio against St. Mary's University on Tuesday, March 6th (the Rattlers are playing games all over the city this year while major renovations take place to their home field).

The Cardinals return home on March 16th for the start of a four-game, Lone Star Conference series against Abilene Christian University.
