It was day two of the marathon Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) swimming and diving championships and a near sweep in the 500-freestyle kept UIW on top of the team standings.
The 500 is a particular specialty of Incarnate Word as a member of the UIW team has won the event at the national Division II meet three of the past four years. On this Thursday night Mark Rubin got the gold with a swim of 4:28.36. Right behind was Conrado Chede in 4:31.88 and on his heels was Rudy Escalante with a mark of 4:35.81.
And if that weren't enough teammates Ben Brouwer was fifth and Patrick Cardenas was eighth.
On the night's five-event schedule was a win in the 200-IM by Thiago Parravicini. “He had a definite improvement in the first two strokes over his prelim,” UIW Coach Phillip Davis said. “And then he got to the third stroke which is the breast and that is his best.” His winning time was 1:49.32.
Elsewhere the foursome of Daniel Murata, Joey Reeves, Cody Armstrong and Kody Gagne was second in the 200-free relay with a mark of 1:22.67. A group of Daniel Torres, Parravicini, James Shake and Reeves finished second in the 400-medley relay. Their time was 3:17.54.
The RMAC meet at the Aquatic Center at Palo Alto College resumes on Friday with three sessions. Swimming prelims are at 9:30 a.m., diving prelims at 1 p.m. and swimming finals at 5 p.m.
