ABILENE, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word volleyball team traveled to Lone Star Conference rival Abilene Christian on Saturday and dropped a three-set decision 25-23, 26-24, 25-22. (

The Cardinals (8-16, 5-10) led in each set, but were unable to close out any of them. In the first set they led 23-21 before the Wildcats (10-16, 6-10) won the final four points on three kills by Corrie Reeder and a final kill by Jennie Loerch. In the second set the score was tied at 20, 21, 22 and 24, but once again it was the Wildcats on top. In the third set the Cards led early and pulled to within 23-21 late, but ACU was able to close it out.
The Cardinals finished the match with 36 kills, 68 digs, 12.0 blocks and a .123 attack. Tina Chavis (Houston/Bush HS) had an outstanding match with 10 kills, four solo blocks, two aces and a .429 attack. Setter
Sarah Cardenas (San Antonio/O'Connor HS) finished with 12 assists and 13 digs for a double-double while
Lydia Werchan (Spring Branch/Smithson Valley HS) led the defense with 21 digs.
The Wildcats had 48 kills, 79 digs, 6.0 blocks and a .158 attack in the match. They had four players with at least 10 kills. Reeder led the team with 12 kills and a .269 attack while Madelyn Robinett had 10 kills, 18 digs and a .286 attack. Sarah Siemens led all players with 43 assists and added 11 digs. Madison Hoover led the ACU defense with 20 digs.
The Cardinals are back in action on Tuesday night at St. Edward's for a 7 p.m. start.
