Thiago Parravicini hit two provisionals while Sydney Solomon converted a hat trick and the pair was selected as Incarnate Word's male and female athletes of the week for October 15 to October 21.
Over the course of a school year at UIW one male and one female are named athletes of the week based on their performances during competition over a given seven-day period. At the end of the year those selected for weekly honors are on the ballots for athletes of the year as voted by Cardinals' coaches and athletic administrators.
THIAGO PARRAVICINI
It didn't take Thiago Parravicini long to let the swimming world know he is back for runs at national championships in the breaststroke.
In the first meet of the year for the Cardinals he went to Mansfield, Texas, for a meet against the top Division I teams in the region and came home with impressive results. He managed two provisional qualifying marks for next spring's Division II National Championships.
He touched first in the Mansfield 100-breaststroke with a time of 56.54. In last spring's NCAA D-II 100-breast he finished fourth. Also in Mansfield last week he came home second in the 200-breastroke with a time of 2:02.19. At the 2012 NCAA meet he was second in the 200.
Last weekend in Mansfield he also swam second on the UIW 200-medley relay team which was fourth and he was lead off on the 400-freestyle relay team which placed sixth. Parravicini is a senior from Rio de Janiero, Brazil.
The Cardinals were fourth as a team in Mansfield behind Texas, Texas A&M and SMU.
SYDNEY SOLOMON
Sydney Solomon turned a hat trick October 19, a rare feat, and it came at exactly the right time as far as her Incarnate Word soccer teammates were concerned.
UIW was hosting West Texas A&M. Solomon had three shots. All three were on goal. And all three hit the nets. Incarnate Word won 3-0. Her “game-winner” came in the 18th minute. She then waited until the 54th and 62nd minutes in the second half to strike again, and yet again.
What the win did was pull UIW into a tie with WTAMU at the top of the Lone Star Conference. The win also gave the tie-breaker with West Texas A&M to the Cardinals. What is at stake is the host position for the LSC post-season championship tournament and Solomon produced her feat at the right time.
The three goals and six points pushed Solomon into second position at UIW in both categories. She is a junior forward out of Schertz' Randolph HS.
