KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – After playing one of their best matches of the season on Friday, the University of the Incarnate Word was unable to use that momentum on Tuesday night in a straight sets loss at Lone Star Conference rival Texas A&M-Kingsville. (

The Javelinas (8-7, 2-5) easily won the first set 25-17, but the next two sets were close. In each set, the Cardinals (6-9, 3-4) closed to within 20-19, but each time the Hoggies scored five of the last six points of the match.
The Javelinas used a strong service game and attack to send the Cardinals home with the loss. A&M-Kingsville served up 10 aces on the night with Kelsey Washington leading the way with five while the Cardinals manage only one ace to go with six service errors. The Javelinas also attacked at a .286 clip compared to .175 for the Cards.
The Cardinals finished the match with 30 kills and 41 digs. Tina Chavis (Houston/Bush HS) had seven kills, no attack errors and a .538 attack from her middle block position. Beth Soukup (Helotes/O'Connor HS) led the team with eight kills and had a .286 attack.
Danielle Suarez (San Antonio/Antonian Prep) had 16 assists while
Lydia Werchan (Spring Branch/Smithson Valley HS) contributed 14 digs.
The Javelinas pounded out 44 kills and had 46 digs. Kelsee Felux led all players with 11 kills and had a .320 attack. Washington finished with nine kills, 11 digs and five aces while Dedra Brown added nine kills. Setter Sarah Fountain dished out 31 assists and added four kills and six digs.
The Cardinals are back in action on Friday night at home against West Texas A&M at 7 p.m.
