BIG LEAD DOESN'T LAST LONG FOR UIW

Tied at 16-7 in Lone Star Conference play, the University of the Incarnate Word and Southwestern Oklahoma State University took the field Saturday in game three of their conference series in Weatherford, Oklahoma. After nine innings and an 11-7 result, the Bulldogs moved up in the standings and UIW dropped into fourth place.

Early on, it looked like the Cardinals (19-12 overall) were going to blow away SWOSU as they jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first three innings, but Southwestern ripped off seven runs in the bottom of the third inning to knot the score at 7-7.

Then, the Bulldogs scored four more runs as Incarnate Word was unable to answer.

Both teams left seven runners stranded, but the Cardinals had three errors while the Bulldogs were error-free.

Ryan Flowers hit a solo home run for Incarnate Word and finished the game 1-for-4. Matt Roohan and Daniel Qualls were both 3-for-4.

Ethan Lutz took the loss for Incarnate Word (2-2), although the start was by Keith Vasquez.

The Cardinals begin a non-conference week of games on Tuesday, traveling to Laredo for a doubleheader against Texas A&M International University. Then, UIW will play in Austin against St. Edward's University on Friday and then wrap up that series with a single game at Sullivan Field on Saturday at 1 p.m.
