CARDS RUN-RULE VISITING JAGUARS

Cardinals pitcher Keith Vasquez struck out five opponents en route to his 6th win of the season.

The Incarnate Word baseball team got a little payback on Tuesday afternoon, beating University of Houston-Victoria, 14-4, in a mercy-rule shortened game in the 8th inning to avenge an 8-4 loss to the Jaguars earlier this season.

Keith Vasquez got the start and the eventual win for UIW (28-12 overall) as he battled for 4.0 of the eight-inning contest, striking out 5 opponents and allowing just two runs in the second inning. After him, Justin Kanas (1.0 IP), Zach Anderson (2.0 IP) and Matt Hickman (1.0 IP) combined to allow just five hits and two runs against the rest of the way.

At the plate, UIW had 18 combined hits, let by a 4-for-5 effort by Matt Roohan. Other Cardinals with multiple hits were Mike De La Rosa, Daniel Qualls, Jackson Woodruff, Matt Flores and Ryan Flowers – each with two hits, including home runs by De La Rosa and Qualls (John Zule had a home run as well) and doubles by Roohan (2), Woodruff (2), Flores, and Flowers.

Flowers's double was the hit that brought home the game-winning run in the eighth inning. He finished 2-for-2 after pinch-hitting and taking over in center field in the 7th inning.

UIW is now in the midst of a nine-game winning streak and will return to Lone Star Conference action this Friday and Saturday, on the road against East Central Oklahoma in a three-game conference series.
