The Cardinal baseball team had a tied road game get away from them Sunday in Odessa, losing to Texas-Permian Basin, 6-2.
UIW (16-8 overall) was tied with UTPB, 1-1, going into the bottom of the eighth inning, but the home team generated five runs in their at-bat and put the game out of reach for Incarnate Word, which could only answer with one run in the top of the ninth inning.
The Cardinals' first run was score in the third inning as Matt Flores reached home after getting batted-in by Leroy Urbina. In the ninth, John Zule pinch-hit for Brandon Clark, drew a walk, stole second and then scored on an RBI single by Steven Vidaurri.
UIW's Justin Kanas took the loss. Keith Vasquez got the start and went six complete innings, striking out five and walking one and surrendering just one run (earned), but was not a factor in the decision. Kanas struck out three Falcons.
Matt Roohan's hitting streak has reached 21 games. He hit a single.
Incarnate Word is back home this weekend, hosting a three-game Lone Star Conference series against Cameron University. Friday will be a doubleheader, starting at 1 p.m., and Saturday's game will also start at 1 p.m.
