TALE OF TWO GAMES AT SULLIVAN

Reliever Trey McCarty pitched two complete innings, allowing just one hit and striking out four Hilltoppers.

Needing to secure two wins to ensure second place in the Heartland Conference for the 2010 Baseball Tournament, the Incarnate Word Cardinals played host to St. Edward's University in a doubleheader Friday and accomplished half of what they set out to do.

In game one, UIW scored 26 unanswered runs, including a 13-run third inning, en route to a 26-0 domination of the Hilltoppers.

The Cardinals connected on 23 hits (with six players connecting on more than one hit in the game), including a home run by Daniel Qualls and doubles by Matt Flores, John Zule, and Drew Hamilton.

Starting pitcher Kirk Jewasko allowed just one hit over five innings of work. Reliever Trey McCarty pitched two complete innings, allowing just one hit and striking out four Hilltoppers. Jewasko improves to 11-1 on the year.

However, in game two on the day, St. Edward's bounced back from an early 4-2 deficit to hold on for a 7-5 win.

SEU had two home runs and although they were out-hit by UIW (34-15, 32-13 conference), 9-6, the Hilltoppers (34-18, 29-16 overall) took advantage of four Cardinal errors.

In the seventh inning, Incarnate Word was trailing 7-5 and had the middle of its lineup at the plate, but a flyout by Matt Roohan, a strikeout by Reno Malay and a groundout by Jackson Woodruff ended the Cardinals' comeback attempt before it got off the ground.

The two teams will square off again at Sullivan Field on Saturday, starting at 1 p.m., in another conference doubleheader of seven-inning games.
