Baseball's Season Ends in Nacogdoches

NACOGDOCHES, TXThe University of the Incarnate Word baseball team lost its final series of the season against Stephen F. Austin University. The sweep ends the Cardinals' 2025 season.

Game 1: UIW 12, SFA 14 

Rob Liddington Jr. started the scoring for the Cardinals by crushing a solo homer over the left field wall, giving UIW a 1-0 lead in the first. Later in the inning, the Lumberjacks scored one on a solo homer to tie the game at 1-1. 

SFA scored on a double play in the second to go up 2-1. 

After two scoreless innings, the Cardinals scored four runs in the fifth to take a 5-2 lead. Ryder Hernandez tied the game with a sacrifice fly, and AJ Herrera drove in three runs with a double down the left field line. In the home half of the inning, the Lumberjacks drove in four runs to retake the lead, 6-5. 

In the sixth inning, the Cardinals scored five to retake the lead, 9-6. Gray Bane started the scoring with a sacrifice fly. Thomas Lyssy singled in a run. Mendoza followed with a two-run double, and Herrera singled in Mendoza to conclude the scoring. SFA responded with a six-run sixth inning to lead 12-10. 

Tyler Cowan tied the game in the seventh on a two-run single, bringing the score to 12-12. Later in the inning, SFA scored two, bringing the final score to 14-12.  

Game 2: UIW 2, SFA 6 

The Lumberjacks got on the board first, scoring a run in the second on a solo homer to lead 1-0. 

After three scoreless innings, the Cardinals got on the board in the sixth to tie the game at 1-1. Daniel Calabrese tied the game with a sacrifice fly to center field. In the bottom of the inning, SFA scored two to retake the lead, 3-1. 

JD Gregson hit a solo homer over the wall in the seventh to pull UIW within one, 3-2. Later in the inning, the Lumberjacks responded with a three-run seventh inning to bring the final score to 6-2. 

Game 3: UIW 12, SFA 13  

The Cardinals jumped out to an early lead in the first inning on a solo homer by Rob Liddington Jr. SFA tied the game at 1-1 in the home half of the first inning. 

Ryan Scott sent his seventh homer of the season over the wall in the second to give UIW a 2-1 lead. The Lumberjacks tied the game in the bottom of the inning, bringing the score to 2-2. 

Scott and Tyler Cowan singled in runs in the third to retake the lead, 4-2.  

A wild pitch and a sacrifice fly by Rey Mendoza extended the Cardinal lead to 6-2 entering the bottom of the fourth. SFA scored two in the home half of the fourth inning, bringing the score to 6-4. 

In the fifth, the Lumberjacks pulled within one, 6-5. 

Brandon Burckel and Cowan recorded RBI singles in the sixth to extend the lead to 8-5. 

Liddington singled in a run in the seventh to stretch the Cardinal lead to 9-5. In the bottom of the seventh, the Lumberjacks took their first lead by scoring six runs to pull ahead 11-9. 

In the eighth, SFA added two runs to extend the lead to 13-9. 

Thomas Lyssy homered to lead off the top of the ninth. Mendoza finished his collegiate career with a two-run homer, bringing the final score to 13-12.
