The Cardinal baseball team started Saturday's baseball action against St. Edward's University by continuing a game that had been suspended the previous night with UIW leading 7-5. But, after the delay, the Hilltoppers came out and score five runs and defeated the Cardinals 10-9 to finish off the game and then St. Edward's carried that momentum into a 15-5 victory over Incarnate Word in the day's second game.
St. Edward's scored five runs in the continued seventh inning of game one for the 10-7 lead. Incarnate Word was able to get two runs scored in the top of the ninth thanks to some good hitting by the heart of the order – getting it done with singles and sacrifice flies – but UIW couldn't get the game tying run home before the third out.
In the second game, Incarnate Word trailed early, but had fought back to close the gap to 6-5 until the seventh inning where the momentum came to a screeching halt as the Cardinals went down 1-2-3 and responded on the field by giving up seven runs on four hits (two were doubles).
Now with a record of 18-7 overall and 18-5 in the Heartland Conference (still in alone in first place), UIW will play host to Tarleton State on Tuesday before two weekends on the road against Lincoln University and Newman University to finish off the month of March.
