Cunningham spent the last six seasons as an assistant coach for the Cardinals. She has been a part of a coaching staff that has taken the women's basketball program to new heights.

In the 2024-25 season, Cunningham helped guide the Red and Black to a first-round bye and the fourth seed in the SLC Tournament for the third year in a row. They then reached the semi-finals and were selected to the postseason Women's National Invitational Tournament (WNIT).

The 2023-24 squad broke multiple program records. The team set a new school record for overall wins, surpassing the mark previously set in 2022-23. The 19-11 record marked a school record for overall winning percentage (.633). The number of conference wins (12) broke the school record.

The 2022-23 team broke the school record for overall wins set in 2019-20 and 2021-22. The 15-14 record marked UIW's first overall winning record since becoming Division I. The number of conference wins (10) matched the school record set in 2019-20. In addition to a program-best fourth-place finish in the conference standings, school records were set for conference winning percentage (.556) and consecutive games won.

Cunningham's third season as an assistant coach at UIW in 2021-22 saw the Cardinals win the Southland Conference tournament championship and earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, both of which were firsts in UIW women's basketball history.

The 2020-21 season was disrupted by games canceled due to COVID-19 and a mid-February ice storm. The Cardinals qualified for the Southland Conference tournament for the second time in school history.

In her first season with the Cardinals, 2019-20, Cunningham helped lead the team to a 14-15 overall record and a 10-10 record in conference play, marking the best record at the time since the team moved up to Division I in 2013-14.

Before joining the UIW coaching staff, Cunningham came to the Cardinals after two years outside of the collegiate coaching ranks. During the 2018-19 season, she was an assistant coach for the Alamo City Aztecs of the Minor League Basketball Association (2018-19). Here, she helped guide the team to a 6-1 record and a berth in the regional championship game.

Prior to her time in San Antonio, Cunningham spent three years (2014-17) as a recruiting coordinator at the University of Louisiana Monroe.

Before joining the Warhawks, Cunningham spent the 2013-14 season as the video coordinator at Rice.

She began her coaching career in the high school ranks as an assistant coach at Fairfax High School in her hometown of Los Angeles. During the 2012-13 season, Fairfax posted a 24-7 record and reached the CIF Los Angles Section Division I Championship Game.

Cunningham played collegiately at Rice (2002-06), where she helped guide the Owls to 79 wins and a trio of postseason appearances (WNIT Second Round, 2004; NCAA First Round, 2005; WNIT First Round, 2006). The 2004-05 squad that reached the NCAA Tournament finished 24-9 overall and won both the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) regular season and tournament titles.

Following her collegiate career, Cunningham had a four-year professional career in Europe. During her overseas stint, she played for Viernheim (Germany), Alexandria (Romania), Forssa (Finland), Gotha (Germany) and Sandhausen (Germany).

Cunningham graduated from Rice with a bachelor's degree in psychology in 2006 and earned her master's degree in teaching from USC in 2013.
