Biography

2024 - The 2023 Newcomer of the Year, Rey Mendoza, battled an injury for most of the season but still put-up numbers for the Cardinals with 31 runs, 37 hits, seven doubles, four home runs, and 24 RBIs through 38 games. Defensively he holds a perfect fielding percentage at left field with 80 catches, 78 POs, two assists, and zero errors.

2023 - Named SLC Newcomer of the Year and selected to the ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Division I Central All-Region Second Team. In his first season as a Cardinal, Mendoza made an immediate impact, earning the title of Southland Conference Newcomer of the Year. As the go-to player for UIW all season, he came in clutch with three walk-off homers to help the team to crucial victories and the highest SLC seed in program history at No. 2. He had a season-high three hits against McNeese and five RBIs against Houston Baptist University. Mendoza led the team in runs with 48 and in RBIs with 61 which put him first in the conference and in the UIW season record book.

2022 -  Appeared in 13 games, starting five...scored a run and RBI against UTRGV. 

2021 - Did not play. 

2020 - Appeared in nine games, making five starts in left field...slashed .250/.375/.308, finishing 6-for-24...had one home run, five RBIs, two runs scored and two walks.

2019-2020 American Athletic Conference All-Academic Team

Personal: Rey comes from a family of athletes, including his parents Reynol and Ana Mendoza who are both UIW alums. As UIW's highest drafted student-athlete, his father, Reynol went on to play for the Florida Marlins (AAA) for nine years. His mother, Ana played volleyball at UIW for all four years. Rey has two sisters and one brother. His two sisters played softball aat the University of Texas at Arlington while his brother is currently at Temple Junior College.
