Prince Johnson is entering his 14th season with the Cardinals basketball program. He has seen it all as a student-athlete, student assistant, graduate assistant, assistant and now the associate head coach. He has played a key role in three Heartland Conference Championships teams and three NCAA Division II Tournament appearances.
He started as a student-athlete playing two seasons before joining the coaching staff for four years. He earned his undergraduate degree in 2001.
After the 2004-05 season, he took a year off from coaching before returning as an assistant coach when Ken Burmeister was brought in to turn around the UIW program in spring 2006.
As a member of Burmeister’s staff, Johnson is involved with all aspects of the program’s operations. His primary responsibilities are in the lifeline areas of any college program—coaching and recruiting.
A native of Lexington, Ky., Johnson played two years with Incarnate Word finishing his eligibility in the spring of 2000. Over those two campaigns, he started 47 of his 53 games.
In 1999, his junior year, UIW advanced to the Elite Eight of the NAIA National Tournament. He shot an astounding .667 from the field setting a school record. That team was voted number one in the nation during the regular season.
He graduated from Lexington’s Tates Creek High School and then played two years at Texas’ Jacksonville Baptist JC. In high school, he was named one of the top five players in Kentucky and he was all-state while playing for a championship football team.
