Johnny Brown

Veteran men’s college basketball assistant coach Johnny Brown joined the UIW men’s basketball staff  in the summer of 2015 with over 20 years of experience under his belt.
    Most recently, Brown spent time at Connors State College and Ranger College.  Prior to that he was at Southern Utah University for five years from 2007-12.  He worked with conditioning, scouting, recruiting and on-the-floor coaching while with the Thunderbird program.  He has previous NCAA Division I stops at Fresno State, Montana State, Northern Iowa and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on his resume.
    Brown helped Fresno State to NIT bids in 1996, ‘97, and ‘98, but left the Bulldogs to help establish the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi program, which played its first season in 1999-00.  He also helped coach Eastern Oklahoma College to a regional final appearance in 2001-02 and a semi-final appearance in 2003-04.
    Brown began his coaching career at Cal Poly Pomona in 1992 and has also coached at Binghamton University and New Mexico Junior College.  He has always been recognized for his ability to effectively communicate and work with other coaches, staff, administration, students and student-athletes.  His strengths include organization, motivation and inspiration that comes out through his passion for coaching.
    A former first-team all-Western Athletic Conference selection at New Mexico and three-time all-star in the World Basketbal League, Brown’s name is still listed four times in the Western Athletic Conference record book for single-season scoring average, field goal percentage, field goals made and free throws attempted.
    After his collegiate days ended, Brown played five years in the professional ranks before joining the coaching fraternity.  He has coached 12 current or former professional players, including Melvin Ely and Rafer Alston of the NBA.
    Brown is a 1986 graduate of University of New Mexico, with a degree in university studies, sociology and speech communication.  He is originally from Los Angeles and attended Manual Arts High School.
