Brian Curtis, a former student-assistant under Ken Burmeister, begins his fifth season as an assistant coach at the university and his ninth year on the UIW coaching staff.
In his previous role, he supervised the film exchange process, played a major role in summer camp administration and assisted in all internal operations of the basketball program. During his first five years on the coaching staff in San Antonio, Curtis helped the Cardinals post a 95-46 (.674) record while winning two Heartland Conference and Conference Tournament Championships and advancing to two straight NCAA Tournaments.
Since becoming a full-time assistant coach, Curtis has taken on more of a role in practice and in recruiting. The Cardinals have also put together a 39-17 record since joining NCAA Division I and the Southland Conference prior to the 2013-14 season. During that time the team has finished in the top 10 in the nation in scoring each season. He was one of the coaches critical to the recruitment and development of Denzel Livingston who finished his career in the top four in school history in points, three-pointers, blocks, steals and free throws. Livingston is now on the Houston Rockets NBDL team, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers.
Following his high school playing career at John Marshall High School, he joined the UIW basketball staff as a student assistant coach for three years while he completed his undergraduate degree and graduate assistant coach for two years as he completed his master’s degree. Curtis was responsible for making personnel, team and post-game edits, camp director, internal operations and supervised the film exchange process. He earned a bachelor’s of business degree in sport management from the University of the Incarnate Word in December 2009 and an MBA with a sport management concentration in December 2011.
A native of San Antonio, Curtis has a hand in all elements of the program from practice days to game days and everything in between including the off-seasons.
