Augie Melendez, Jr.

Agustin Melendez, Jr. (Augie) joined the University of the Incarnate Word in 2017, as a Graduate Assistant for Softball and Football. He was hired as a full-time athletic trainer, to assist with football, in 2019. Melendez was later promoted as the head football athletic trainer in 2021.

In his current role, Augie oversees the medical care of 100-plus football student-athletes. He is responsible for creating, executing, and managing rehabilitation and treatment plans for the program and communicating directly to coaches about injuries or changes in student-athlete medical status. He works closely with UIW’s Strength & Conditioning staff regarding weight room modifications for injured student-athletes. Melendez ensures the team physicians' plan of care is executed and schedules medical appointments with the Christus Santa Rosa healthcare system or other necessary medical providers.

As the Head Football Athletic Trainer, he communicates with NFL or other professional organizations regarding draft-eligible players, coordinates medical coverage for home events, communicates with visiting teams’ sports medicine staff, and supervises assistant athletic trainers, intern athletic trainers, MSAT students, and undergraduate students.

The Galveston Island native, grew up practicing martial arts and boxing, which he is still greatly involved with on a professional level as a “Cutman”.

He received his Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi and Master of Science in Kinesiology from the University of the Incarnate Word. Melendez is licensed through the State of Texas and is nationally certified as an athletic trainer. Augie also holds certifications in CPR/First Aid, Oxygen & Epi-Pen Administration, Mental Health First Aid, Blood Flow Restriction therapy, Dry Needling, & IV Administration.
