During the 2023 season, the University of the Incarnate Word defense led the Southland Conference in total defense, scoring defense, passing yards allowed, passing defense efficiency, first-down defense, third-down conversion defense, and defensive touchdowns. Nationally, UIW ranked first in passing defense efficiency, tied for fourth in defensive touchdowns, sixth in both total defense and passing yards allowed, and seventh in third-down conversion defense. Spragg helped the defensive backs Brandon Richard and Ronald Wilson earned All-Conference honors.

In 2018 Spragg, he helped the UIW coaching staff engineer one of the most dramatic turnarounds in the FCS. Defensively, Malick Phillips and Louis Otis received All-Conference honorable mention honors.

By the conclusion of the regular season (Week 11), UIW led the FCS with 29 turnovers gained and recorded at least one takeaway in every game—including the playoffs—for the first time in program history. The Cardinals’ turnover streak extended to 12 consecutive games following the 2018 season.

The defensive highlight of the season came against Sam Houston State on Nov. 1, when UIW forced a program-record seven turnovers. These seven turnovers also led the SLC in 2018. The Cardinals also recorded four interceptions at Central Arkansas (Nov. 10), setting the program record for picks in a single game.
