T.R. St. Charles has been the athletic trainer for football at Incarnate Word since the summer of 2008. He has been with the football program from the first ever practice.
St. Charles has a wealth of knowledge and experience in the sports medicine field having worked high school, college, national and international sporting events. In 2015-16, the sports medicine staff for football won the coveted Best of San Antonio Award in the Sports Team category.
Originally from Tennessee, he has spent the past 30-plus years in the Texas high school ranks before moving to UIW. He first worked in San Antonio at Holmes High School from 1977-80 followed by a stint in Texas City before returning to the area for jobs at Taft, Clark and finally O’Connor high schools. His longest stint was at Taft where he worked from 1985-1998.
St. Charles has worked with the U.S. Olympic Committee athletic training staff on three occasions. He had a sports medicine volunteer internship with the ARCO Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, CA in 2000. He was a staff athletic trainer at the 2003 World University Games in Daegu, South Korea and at the 2004 Paralympics in Athens, Greece.
He has traveled with USA Men's Field Hockey to numerous events. From 2007-2011 he worked with both the national team and U21 national team in Olympic qualifying events, Junior World Cups and International matches. He went with the teams to Trinidad & Tobago, New Zealand, Chile, Malaysia, Singapore, Canada and Argentina.
In addition to field hockey, he has also worked national gymnastics and taekwondo events in San Antonio.
He is board certified by the National Athletic Trainers Association and licensed by the State of Texas. He holds memberships in the Texas State and Alamo Area Athletic Trainers Association as well as the U.S. Olympic Committee Sports Medicine Society and the Texas Society of Sports Medicine.
St. Charles was an inaugural inductee into the Alamo Area Athletic Trainers Association Hall of Fame in 2011. His professional service includes the Bexar County Medical Society, Alamo Area Athletic Trainers Assocation, National Board of Certification, Southwest Athletic Trainers Association, National Athletic Trainers Association and the Texas State Athletic Trainers Association.
The author of several articles and a regular speaker at conventions, St. Charles earned his bachelor’s degree at Vanderbilt University in history and a master’s degree in health and physical education at George Peabody College of Vanderbilt.
He and his wife, Teri, are the parents of Jeff, Kyle, Taylor and Alexis.
