Rickey Hunley joined the University of the Incarnate Word football staff as the recruiting coordinator and safeties coach in the spring of 2018.
Prior to working with the Cardinals, Hunley served as the linebacker coach and special teams coordinator at the University of West Georgia. During each of his three seasons, the Wolves led the GSC in total defense. UWG also ranked 44th nationally in kick return defense and 7th in kick return average in 2017.
Under Hunley’s guidance, JJ Jones ranked 31st in Division II in punt return average, and Cameron Magee earned Division II Conference Commissioner’s Association All-Super Region 2 honors.
Hunley tutored a trio of All-GSC linebackers during his first two seasons at UWG. Gabe Freeman was a two-time all-conference performer, and Chris Harthone and Marion Chapman earned All-GSC honors as well.
That trio was instrumental in West Georgia’s defensive success during Hunley’s first two seasons with the Wolves. UWG led the GSC in total defense each of those two seasons.
Prior joining the Wolves, Hunley spent four seasons in multiple capacities at Southwest Baptist (Mo.) University. He coached the secondary, coordinated the special teams and served as the Bearcats’ recruiting coordinator. While at Southwest Baptist, Hunley coached three All-MIAA defensive backs in 2013 and 2014.
Before working at SBU, Hunley was on the coaching staff at Lindenwood (Mo.), where he helped the team transition to NCAA Division II and the MIAA Conference.
Hunley has also served on the coaching staffs at Iowa State, and his alma mater, Drake University.
While coaching at Drake, Hunley guided Jacob Craig and Andy Green to first team All-PFL honors as defensive backs. Green was also selected to the Sports Network Mid Major All-American first team as a defensive back.
Before working at Drake, Hunley coached at the high school level in both Missouri and Iowa.
Hunley received many honors for his on-field prowess at Drake. He was a four-year letterman and 2003 team captain. Hunley was a part of the Bulldogs’ 2000 PFL Championship team.
A native of the Kansas City area, Hunley and wife Nakisha have two children: a son, Taylor and a daughter, Raegan.
