Cody Crill

Cody Crill joined the University of the Incarnate Word football staff as the offensive coordinator in the spring of 2018.

In his second season with UIW, Crill helped guide the Cardinals to five wins with two wins over ranked opponents (No. 25 HBU and No. 23 Southeastern Louisiana). For the second consecutive season, the Cardinals also broke several program records.

Among the offensive records were pass completions (303), pass completion percent (57.9), all-purpose yards (6,283) and total points (358). Additionally, UIW finished second in program history in rushing TDs (19) and passing yards (3,421), topped only by the records Crill helped the Cardinals break in 2018.

Crill guided WR Kam Williams to four consecutive 100-yard receiving games, with a season-best 146 and three touchdowns on six catches against Texas Southern. Williams’ three TD catches against TSU tied a program record for single-game TD receptions.

Additionally, sophomore QB Jon Copeland had six 300-yard games through the air and accumulated 3,341 passing yards. These yards ranked No. 12 in the nation following the first round of the FCS Playoffs.

In his first season as the offensive coordinator, the Cardinals had the most successful year in program history, marked by a Southland Conference championship and an FCS Playoffs berth. UIW was 1-10 overall and 1-7 in SLC action in 2017, resulting in one of the best turnarounds in program history when the Cardinals posted a 6-4 record in 2018 (six wins ties the program record).

Crill helped guide UIW to multiple season records, including total offense (5,315), total points (357), and touchdowns (48).

The Cardinals also received multiple postseason awards, including seven all-SLC honors and a Southland Conference Freshman of the Year selection (QB Copeland). Copeland went on to shatter the single season passing record, amassing 2,984 yards and earned FCS freshman All-American honors from HERO Sports.

Copeland became the third QB in program history to throw for over 2,000 yards in a single season. He also set single season records for pass attempts (368), pass completions (208), passing touchdowns (22), passing efficiency (137.3), yards per pass (8.1), and yards per game (298.4). Additionally, Copeland set the record for total offensive yards (3,061) and touchdowns responsible for (25).

Copeland recorded 400 yards in two consecutive games (vs. SLU and at Lamar), and finished the season with five games of over 300 passing yards, becoming the first quarterback in program history to throw for 300 yards in four or more games in a single season.

In addition to Copeland, Ra’Quanne Dickens, Phillip Baptiste, and Kody Edwards set records for the Cardinals. Dickens became UIW’s first 1000-yard rusher and set a program record for single season rushing yards with 1,117. He also set program records for rushing touchdowns (14) and 100-yrad rushing games in a single season (5).

Senior wide receivers Kody Edwards (932 yards) and Baptiste (905 yards) each set records on the outside in 2018. Baptiste broke single season program records in receptions (59), receiving touchdowns (9), and receptions per game (5.36), while Edwards set program bests with five 100-yard receiving outings and 1,389 all-purpose yards. Edwards also broke the program record for career receiving yards (2,353) and receptions (140), and he tied the program record for receiving touchdowns (14).
