THIBODAUX, La. - A breakaway 67th-minute goal was all the offense Nicholls would need, as the Colonels took down the University of the Incarnate Word 1-0 in a Southland Conference women's soccer matchup Thursday night.
With just over 23 minutes to play, Nichols' Kate Guillory went the length of the field, speeding past multiple Cardinal defenders and getting a shot just past the outstretched fingers of a diving
Hannah Alexander in goal.
UIW, which had 11 shots on the night but just two on goal, had multiple opportunities to answer, none better than a
Louise Coates free kick with just under two minutes remaining. Coates got a shot off, but it sailed just over the crossbar, and the Colonels were able to run out the clock.
Thursday marked a rare occurrence, as Nicholls entered the night just 1-13 all-time against the Cardinals. The Colonels' only previous win over UIW came on Sept. 28, 2014.
Alexander finished the night with seven saves for Incarnate Word, which falls to 4-5-2 on the season with a 1-1 mark in the SLC.
The Cardinals return to Louisiana to face Southeastern at 1 p.m. Sunday.
