UIW Softball Ends Regular Season with Win Over SLC Front-Runner

HAMMOND, LA. – The Incarnate Word softball team ended the 2026 regular season on a high note, capturing an 8-7 road win over Southland Regular Season Champion Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday afternoon from North Oak Park.

Incarnate Word moves its overall record to 32-19 with a 17-10 record in Southland play, while Southeastern is now 44-12 on the year with a 24-3 League mark.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Incarnate Word jumped on the scoreboard early with two runs in the first inning, including an RBI single from junior Bryanna Fuentes.
  • A grand slam from senior Madison Dorrow in the second inning moved the UIW lead to 6-0.
  • The Lions cut the deficit to one with a five-run third inning before senior Victoria Altamirano belted a two-run home run, her 21st of the season, over the fence in the third inning to move the UIW advantage to 8-5.
  • Southeastern continued to chip away, scoring a run in the fourth and another in the fifth to trail 8-7.
  • Senior Bella Mitchell picked up her third save of the year after shutting down the Lion offense, holding the home team to just one hit over the final two innings to preserve the win.
NOTES
  • Junior Ava Hernandez was also effective in relief, allowing one unearned run on two hits across 1.2 innings in the circle.
  • Fuentes and fellow junior Ayla Gonzales each had multiple hits in the game, while Dorrow and Altamirano both had a home run. Altamirano also scored three runs in the victory, bringing her season total to 69 and adding to her single-season record number.

Incarnate Word turns its focus to the postseason where it earned the No. 4 seed in the 2026 Southland Conference Softball Championship. The Cardinals will compete in the Hammond Bracket in Hammond, Louisiana, where they will face fifth-seeded Lamar University on Thursday, April 30, at 1:00 p.m.
