UIW Falls to SLU in Doubleheader

HAMMOND, La. - The University of the Incarnate Word softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Southeastern Louisiana on the road on Friday. UIW's overall record fell to 31-19 and 16-10 in Southland Conference play. The Lions triumphed 8-0 in game one and 10-0 in game two.

Game 1: SLU 8, UIW 0 (5 Innings)

SLU had the game's opening scoring chance in the bottom of the first inning. The Lions put two on with two out, but they were thwarted by UIW shortstop Prisais Quintero, who fielded a sharp ground ball to her left and flipped to second to end the threat.

The Cardinals' first scoring chance came in the top of the third. Sydney Zenon began the frame with a walk. Later in the inning, Victoria Altamirano was walked intentionally, putting runners on first and second with two outs. However, UIW stranded both.

The Lions broke through in the bottom of the fourth inning. A bases-loaded triple scored the first three for SLU. The Lions added five more in the frame and took an 8-0 lead into the fifth. UIW got two runners on in the top of the fifth, but the Cardinals were unable to plate them and extend the contest, ending game one in a five-inning run rule.

Game 2: SLU 10, UIW 0 (5 Innings)

UIW put two on in the top of the first inning on walks by Altamirano and Erin Perez. They were stranded on the corners when Zenon lined out to end the frame.

The Lions' offense began game two in a similar fashion to the way it ended game one. A grand slam in the bottom of the first gave SLU a 4-0 lead. A run-scoring ground out extended that advantage to 5-0. SLU tacked on two runs in both the second and third innings.

One more run crossed for the Lions in the fourth, extending their lead to 10-0. UIW's offense got one runner on in the fourth and two in the fifth, but did not manage to score. SLU finished the game in five innings for the second time in the doubleheader.

UIW (31-19, 16-10 SLC) is back in action on Saturday for its final regular season game of the year. The Cardinals and Lions are set to finish their series at Noon on April 25.
