Men's Tennis Wins 7th Straight, Rolling Over UTSA 6-1

Box Score A pair of rain delays only slowed down the inevitable as the Incarnate Word Men's Tennis team jumped out to an early match lead and never let it go, taking down cross-town rival, UTSA, 6-1.

Today's win was a significant one in the development of the Incarnate Word men's tennis program. The Cardinals have historically struggled against the Roadrunners since UIW elevated their athletic programs to NCAA Division I in 2013, losing 7-of-9 matchups with their fellow San Antonio-based school, and each of the last four. But that streak came to an end today.

The convincing win not only changed their fortunes against UTSA, but it also extended their current win streak to seven matches. The seven-straight wins ties the longest win streak in the Division I-era, most recently set in 2024. During the streak, Incarnate Word has surrendered just three match points as the Cardinals have been dominant since their season-opening loss to #2 Texas.

UIW started the match on a strong note, rallying to take the doubles point and go up 1-0. After the Cardinals' first doubles team lost, 6-1, Incarnate Word's third doubles team of Augustin Salazar and Emilio Vila evened the doubles score at one match apiece, winning 6-3. The early advantage came down to second doubles where Alexandre Chauvel and Alejandro Hernandez were in a close battle. In the end, it was a late break that was the difference as the duo pulled out a 7-5 win and put the Cardinals up 1-0.

Rain interrupted singles play twice, but the Cardinals proved resilient, winning five of the six matches. Ian Uraga took care of his opponent at sixth singles, 6-0, 6-4, to make the match score 2-0, but third singles wrapped up shortly after Uraga came off the court with UTSA making it 2-1.

Hernandez posted a 6-4, 6-4 victory at first singles, followed by Vila's 7-5, 6-3 win at second singles which sealed the Incarnate Word victory with the match score now 4-1.

Both remaining matches went three sets, one going a full three sets and the other ending in a third-set super tiebreaker with the overall match decided and delays pushing the match into the latter stages of the night.

Santiago Flyckt lost the first set of his fifth singles match, 5-7, but he rallied to take the second set 6-2 to force the third set super tiebreaker. Flyckt carried the momentum and execution he found in the second set into the breaker and won it going away by a score of 10-2.

Salazar's win at fourth singles, which saw him pull out a close third set, was the icing on the victory cake for the Cardinals. He won the first set 6-3, but lost the second set, 2-6. The third was played in full and saw Salazar come away with the 6-4 win, giving him the victory and ending the overall match at 6-1 in favor of UIW.

The Cardinals return to the courts to go for win number eight in this streak next weekend as they host the University of Louisiana on Sunday, March 15th at 11:00 a.m.
