Cardinals Walk It Off Over Nicholls

SAN ANTONIO, TexasThomas Lyssy walks it off as the University of the Incarnate Word wins 5-4 in extra innings over conference opponent Nicholls State University this afternoon at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B. The Cardinals are now 3-1 in extra-inning games this season.

UIW is now 13-10 and 5-6 in the Southland, while Nicholls drops to 12-13 and 4-6 on the season.

UIW took an early lead in the bottom of the first when Preston Newberry singled up the middle and then scored off Cole Tabor's RBI double down the right field line to go in front, 1-0.

In the bottom of the second, Drake Anderson started things off on a five-pitch walk and then moved to second on a wild pitch. He later scored when Cris Enriquez singled to center to make it 2-0 Cardinals
Nicholls took the lead in the third when it pushed four runs across on two hits to go in front, 4-2.

UIW in the fourth was able to cut the lead to one, and it started when Enriquez walked to reach first.  Following a lineout to left, Trent Rucker hit into a fielder's choice to take first, but Enriquez was out at second on the play. Newberry kept the inning moving when he singled to left center to put runners on the corners with two down. Rucker later touched home to make it 4-3 when Newberry attempted to steal second and got himself caught in a rundown. Newberry was tagged out after Rucker scored to end the inning.

With one down in the seventh and trailing, Newberry tied the game with a home run to left center on a 2-0 count for his fourth home run of the season.

Both teams went scoreless in the eighth. In the bottom of the ninth, UIW got the game-winning run on second with two outs, but a strikeout ended the inning and sent the game to extra innings.

After both teams were unable to push a run across in the tenth, the Cardinals came through in the eleventh.  Following a groundout to third, Anderson walked and later advanced to third when Enriquez singled to the gap in right-center. With the game-winning run on third, Lyssy, on a 1-0 count, lifted the ball deep into right center for a sacrifice fly, which allowed Anderson to score the game-winning run.

The UIW bullpen today, made up of Jose Bludau, Jordan Bush, Ashton Perkins, and Fawster Voytko, allowed three hits, three walks, and struck out three over nine innings. Voytko picked up the win to improve to 2-2 as he went four innings, giving up a hit and a walk.

Newberry led the team at the plate as he was 3-for-5 with a home run, two runs scored, and an RBI.  Enriquez finished the day going 2-for-4 and with an RBI, while Tabor tallied a double and an RBI.

UIW looks to go for the series win tomorrow against Nicholls. First pitch is at 1 p.m. CT, and the game can be seen on ESPN+.
