Cardinals Fall in Rubber Game To New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS, La. – The University of Incarnate Word baseball team dropped the final game of the series to the University of New Orleans, 11-7, this afternoon.  UIW is now 11-9 overall and 4-5 in the Southland Conference, while the Privateers are 9-12 and 3-6 in the conference.

Trailing 1-0 after the first and with one down in the second, Colin Cymbalista was hit by a pitch and then took second on a passed ball. He later scored on Tyler Garritano's RBI double to the left-center field gap to tie the game at one.

New Orleans retook the lead in the bottom of the second when it plated a pair of runs to go up 3-1, and then in the third pushed five runs across on five hits to push its lead to, 8-1.

UIW began to chip away at the lead in the top of the fourth. It started when Tony DeJesus walked to open the inning. He then scored off Jake Weaver's deep home run to right field to cut the lead to, 8-3.

Weaver in the fifth, hit his second home run this time with two outs and Cole Tabor on first to put the Cardinals down 8-5.

New Orleans added a pair of runs off a two-run home run in the sixth to push its lead to, 10-5.

The Privateers added a run in the seventh to make it 11-5, but the Cardinals added a pair of runs in the eighth to cut the lead to, 11-7.

In the ninth, UIW's DeJesus singled to left center with one down, but was left stranded as New Orleans recorded back-to-back outs to end the game.

Cardinal starter EJ Garcia scattered nine hits over five innings of working giving up eight runs, while striking out six.

Reliever Landon Fuller pitched a perfect eighth and struck out two.

Weaver finished the day going 2-for-5 with two home runs, four RBIs, two walks, and two runs scored. Teammate Garritano tallied a pair of hits and two doubles with an RBI and a run scored.

Cymbalista, Anderson, Cris Enriquez, and Trent Rucker each tallied a hit.

Incarnate Word is back on the road Wednesday, March 18, when it travels to Abilene, Texas, to face Abilene Christian University at 4 p.m.
