SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team split its Sunday doubleheader against the University of Illinois Chicago at Sullivan Field. The Cardinals erupted for a 13-4 win in the opener before falling 9-2 in the nightcap. Gus McKay (1-0) earned the win in game one, while Aidan Terronez (1-0) picked up the victory in game two.
Game 1:
UIC struck first with a run in the second inning on a sacrifice fly to take an early 1-0 lead.
The Cardinals answered in the fourth as Jake Weaver launched a solo home run to right field to even the score at 1-1.
Illinois Chicago regained the advantage with two runs in the fifth and added another in the sixth to move ahead 4-1.
UIW responded with a decisive five-run sixth inning. Colin Cymbalista drove in a run on a fielder's choice before Trent Rucker delivered the turning point of the game with a grand slam to deep center, giving the Cardinals a 6-4 lead.
Kevin Ramos extended the margin in the seventh with a solo homer to right. Later in the inning, Cymbalista added an RBI single to push the lead to 8-4.
The Cardinals broke the game open in the eighth. Cole Tabor drove in two with a single up the middle, Tony DeJesus followed with an RBI double, and Weaver capped the frame with a two-run single as UIW plated five runs to secure the 13-4 victory.
McKay earned the win in relief, tossing 2.1 innings and allowing one run. UIW finished with 13 runs on 13 hits.
Game 2:
UIW opened the scoring in the first inning as Tabor connected on a solo home run to right field for a 1-0 lead.
UIC responded in the second with a two-run homer to take a 2-1 advantage and added a run in the fifth to extend the lead to 3-1.
The Cardinals cut the deficit to 3-2 in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Kevin Ramos, scoring Preston Newberry.
Illinois Chicago broke the game open in the ninth inning, plating six runs on five hits, including multiple RBI singles and capitalizing on a UIW error to extend the lead to 9-2.
EJ Garcia (0-1) took the loss after allowing three runs over five innings. UIW was limited to four hits in the contest.
