SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word men's basketball team kicked off the new year with a 73-56 win over Houston Christian on Saturday afternoon.
 
Tahj Staveskie led all scorers with 27 and Davion Bailey was just one point behind him with 26. Jordan Pyke was responsible for more than a quarter of the Cardinals's rebounds, grabbing 10 in the game.
 
Davion Bailey was on fire early with 14 points in the first six minutes as the Cardinals built a quick 11-point lead 21-10. Bailey and Staveskie combined for the first 30 UIW points, but as the duo slowed down the Huskies found their way back into the game. Harold Woods got on the board with back-to-back buckets giving the Cardinals a 36-32 lead at the break.
 
The Cardinals outscored HCU 20-11 in the early minutes of the second half, with the difference being three early 3-pointers by none other than Bailey and Staveskie. The Cardinals didn't stop there, continuing to pour it on building their largest lead of the game with less than a minute left. Winning by a final score of 73-56.
