SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word received two Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) awards for the men's soccer team this week. Juan Monrreal was recognized as the Offensive Player of the Week, and Alejandro De La Torre was the Goalkeeper of the Week.
The awards come from UIW's matches against Southern Methodist University (SMU) and the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) last week. The Cardinals won both games 2-1.
De La Torre defended 30 shots and tallied up 14 saves from both games; he is ranked number one in the NCAA for total saves (39). Six keepers started all eight games in the NCAA, and De La Torre has the second-highest save percentage in the country with 89%.
The Cardinals conceded a goal against UTRGV in the first 11 minutes and continued behind the Vaqueros going into halftime. One black and red Cardinal was able to claw itself closer to victory by scoring and assisting two goals for UIW in five minutes.
Freshman forward Monrreal had only logged 60 minutes of playing time for the Cardinals. In his 38 minutes played, he generated two points and kept the lead steady for the remaining 26 minutes left in the match.
Both Monrreal and De La Torre look to rest as they prepare for their first conference game next week on Sept. 26 against Houston Christian University.
