SAN ANTONIO - The University of the Incarnate Word women's soccer team split its first two matches of the season this past week. The Cardinals knocked off the University of North Texas (UNT) 2-1 on Thursday and fell to Texas State 5-0 on Sunday.  

Game 1: UIW 2, UNT 1   

The Cardinals came out hot, taking an early 1-0 lead on a goal from junior Alex Knutson in the 23rd minute. Following Knutson's early goal, the match went into a two-hour lightning delay. 

Following the delay, UIW took a 1-0 lead into the break. The Mean Green responded in the 50th minute with a goal to tie the match at 1-1. Freshman Atiana Lara delivered the go-ahead goal in the 63rd minute to give the Cardinals a 2-1 win. 

Hannah Alexander was stellar in net for the Red and Black, recording 13 saves on 38 shots in the win. 

The Cardinals' win over the Mean Green was their first in program history, as they entered the matchup 0-6 against UNT. 

Game 2: UIW 0, TXST 5  

The Bobcats used a four-goal first half to pull ahead early. 

Alexander recorded five saves to bring her weekly total to 18. 

UIW is back in action Thursday, August 21st, at Rice.
