SAN ANTONIO – The University of the incarnate Word softball team won its first series against Stephen F. Austin in school history over the weekend.
The Cardinals started out the week strong. Jenny Robleo pitched not only a complete seven inning game, but also shutout the Lumberjacks only allowing three hits and striking out seven batters. The Cardinals had four hits in the game with the most important coming in the second inning when
Bryanna Fuentes singled to left field sending Jillian Gutierez across the plate for the only score of the game. The Cardinals took game one, 1-0.
In game number two
Dominique Guerra got the scoring started for the Cardinals with a two-run RBI in the second inning.
Victoria Altamirano followed this up with a three-run home run to make it 5-0 Cardinals. The Jacks scored a single run in the third but UIW immediately responded with a three-run inning pushing that lead to 8-1. SFA put up one more run in the fourth, but it wasn't enough and UIW got the second win in a row.
In the final game of the week the Cardinals jumped out to an early 4-0 in the first few innings. This time the Jacks came roaring back taking a two-run lead heading into the bottom of the seventh. Gutierrez hit a huge RBI double to make it a one-run game. In the end the Cardinals fell by a final score of 6-5.
