SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word softball team dropped its first conference series of the year against McNeese this weekend.
In game on Friday the Cardinals scored the first run of the game, but McNeese responded building a sizable 4-1 lead in the second.
Jasmine Sierra hit a two-run home run to cut into the lead, however, in the fifth McNeese put up two more runs, putting the Cardinals away by a final 7-3.
On Saturday Larisa Jacquez was a standout, pitching 10 scoreless innings striking out three batters and only giving up seven hits. The game was a battle as the Cardinals couldn't get on the board either. That was until the bottom of the 10
th inning with two outs when
Victoria Altamirano came up to the plate. She worked into a 2-2 count and on the fifth pitch sent a shot to left center, breaking the tie and winning the game 1-0 for UIW.
The Cowgirls were in control of the game from the start carrying a 6-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning. UIW fought until the end, scoring three runs in the inning. It wasn't enough and the Cardinals fell in game three 6-3.
