Baseball Takes Down Crosstown Rival on the Road

SAN ANTONIO - The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team ended UTSA's 14-game winning streak, defeating the Roadrunners 8-5 at Roadrunner Field on Tuesday night. Gus McKay (1-0) picked up his first win as a Cardinal, pitching seven stellar innings for the Red and Black.

The Roadrunners scored first, taking a 1-0 lead in the first on a fielder's choice.

Rob Liddington Jr. and Rey Mendoza went back-to-back in the fourth to take a 2-1 lead. Liddington hit his team-leading eighth homer, while Mendoza hit his third of the season. In the home half of the fourth UTSA tied the game at 2-2 on a bunt single.

With the bases loaded, Liddington sent a double down the left field line to drive in all three runs and retake the lead, 5-2. Ryder Hernandez drove in Liddington to extend the lead to 6-2.

Liddington picked up his second homer on the day in the eighth with a man on to extend the lead to 8-2. UTSA scored three runs in the bottom of the inning to bring the final score to 8-5.

McKay allowed just two runs on four hits in seven innings of work to earn the win. He struck out three while working out of several jams. Jonah Posey recorded the final six outs to shut the door on the Roadrunners.

The Cardinals travel to Stephenville, Texas tomorrow to take on Tarleton State. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
