SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word women's tennis team had an action-packed weekend, starting strong on Friday with a dominant doubleheader sweep against Prairie View A&M, but falling in a hard-fought battle against Tarleton State on Sunday.
Prairie View A&M Matches
The Cardinals kicked off the weekend with two commanding wins over Prairie View A&M, showing their strength across the lineup. In match one UIW secured a 6-1 victory, controlling play from start to finish. In the second match, in a clinch-format match, the Cardinals swept 4-0.
Tarleton State Match
Despite what the final score may suggest, the Cardinals put up a tremendous fight against Tarleton, pushing several matches to the limit. Despite the doubles matches not going the Cards' way the team came out firing in singles, taking the lead on most courts. At line five, Montalvo won her match in straight sets. At one point, UIW trailed 3-1 overall, but held leads in the third sets on courts two, three, and four. On line two, Estefania even had one match point in her favor and Paez and Smilia were leading 2-0 and 3-2 in their matches respectively.
The Cardinals will be back in action Friday at noon against Lousiana at home and Sunday in Dallas at SMU at 3 p.m.
