EDINBURG, Texas – The University of the Incarnate Word men's basketball team took down UTRGV on the road, keeping themselves in within striking distance to make the Southland Conference tournament in the final two weeks of the season.
 
The game began just as you would expect from two teams battling it out for postseason contention. The Cardinals and Vaqueros both spent time out in front, but UTRGV went on a 10-0 run. Spurred by Howie Flemming the Vaqueros built a 27-9 lead midway through the half.
 
Dylan Hayman led the charge for UIW scoring the next seven for the Cards and bringing his total in the half to 11. However, the Cardinals were not able to cut too far into the lead and went into the locker room down five, 31-36.
 
In the second half the Cardinals got things started by dominating down low and extending their rebounding lead to 34-23 over UTRGV. UIW didn't just pull down the boards but made sure to make the most of their opportunities, doubling up the Vaqueros in second chance points 18-7, keeping it just a one possession game, 50-52, with 10 minutes to go
 
With just over two minutes left the Cardinals took their largest lead of the game, 62-58. The Vaqueros scored once more to keep the game close, but Jordan Pyke put the game away, scoring on back to back possessions giving UIW the 66-60 lead.
