Box Score CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team faced off against Texas A&M – Corpus Christi, getting a 63-55 overtime win and earning a spot in the Southland Conference Tournament.
Myra Bell led all scorers with 18 points while grabbing 8 rebounds.
Raimi McCrary added 15 points and
Dorian Norris rounded out the Cardinals to score in double figures with 11.
The Cardinals got out front early lead behind two three-pointers and led the Islanders 8-0. TAMU-CC cut into the lead, but in the final minutes of the quarter Destiny Whittaker hit back-to-back jump shots to keep the Cardinals in front, 14-9, at the end of the first.
Corpus battled back and took their first lead of the game, 20-18, with just over a minute remaining in the half. They held that two-point lead at the break 22-20.
The difference in the third quarter was the Cardinals shooting from beyond the arc. Half of UIW's made baskets came from the three-point line helping give the Cardinals a slight edge heading into the final 10 minutes of play.
With 1:10 to go in the fourth quarter the Cardinals trailed by four points, 45-49. UIW was able to find their way to the free throw line on two consecutive possessions, knocking down four-of-five shots from the line we were even at 49. Neither team could convert in the final seconds and it would take five more minutes to determine a winner.
The Cardinals forced a turnover on each of the Islanders first four possessions of overtime. This, along with six points from
Raimi McCrary helped UIW build a lead that could not be overcome in the final minutes of the game as UIW earned a 63-55 win.
