SAN ANTONIO - The University of Incarnate Word women's basketball team is heading to South Texas for a two-game road trip this week.
Their first matchup is on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. against the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. The Vaqueros (12-13) are looking to protect their home court, as they have lost only four home games this season.
They are led by senior forward Kade Hackerott, who leads her team in points (12.9) and steals (1.1) per game.
In January, the Cardinals beat the Vaqueros 52-43 at the McDermott Center. Their persistent defense prevented the Vaqueros from shooting more than 30.4% from the field. UIW forward Destiny Whitaker, who came off the bench, was the leading scorer with 14 points.
The road trip will conclude in Corpus Christi on Saturday against Texas A&M Corpus Christi (11-13). Tipoff is at 1:00 p.m.
During their first meeting in January, the Cardinals dominated the Islanders 76-58. They were in control throughout the game and held the Islanders to only nine points in the fourth quarter. UIW guard Jorja Elliott led in points (16) and steals (4).
