ABILENE, TX. – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team fell to Abilene Christian University, 69-56, on Friday evening at the Moody Coliseum.
Madison Cockrell led the Cardinals with 18 points, nine rebounds, and a game-high seven assists. UIW had three players score in double figures, as
Destiny Whitaker and
Raimi McCrary each contributed 15 points. McCrary added 15 rebounds to notch a double-double and led all players on the glass.
The Wildcats held a narrow 12-10 advantage after the opening quarter, as UIW's defense limited ACU to just 25 percent shooting from the field and 0-for-8 from beyond the arc. The Red and Black were outscored 19-14 in the second frame, heading into halftime trailing 31-24 after shooting 28 percent in the first half.
UIW posted its highest-scoring period in the third quarter with 17 points but entered the final frame down 52-41. The Cardinals opened the fourth with a 7-0 run, but ACU responded with a 14-0 surge to regain control and close out the contest.
The Cardinals return to the McDermott Center for their home opener on Monday night. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. against St. Thomas (TX).
