Women’s Basketball Heads to Abilene for Showdown with Wildcats

SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team is on the road Friday night, taking on Abilene Christian University (ACU) at the Moody Coliseum.

How to Follow Along

UIW

  • The Red and Black are coming off a strong 2024-25 campaign, finishing 17-12 overall and 12-8 in Southland Conference play. UIW earned a first-round bye in the Southland Conference Tournament before defeating Northwestern State in the quarterfinals to advance to the semifinals. The Cardinals' season continued with an at-large bid to the WNIT, where they faced UT Arlington.

  • UIW returns nine letterwinners, including five players who averaged over 18 minutes per game last season. Among the returners are the team's top two scorers — Jorja Elliott (10.0 ppg) and Brynn Lusby (8.8 ppg) — along with Raimi McCrary, who led the team with 179 rebounds in 2024-25.

  • Head Coach Jhasmin Player begins her first season at the helm after spending the past three years as Associate Head Coach at Oklahoma State University. She brings high-level experience as she leads the Cardinals into a challenging non-conference slate.

 Scouting the Wildcats

  • The Wildcats were picked to finish first in the conference in the WAC Preseason Coaches' Poll, while junior guard Payton Hull was named the conference's Preseason Player of the Year.

  • Hull was selected for the Preseason All-WAC Team alongside junior center Meredith Mayes. Hull and Mayes lead an ACU roster that returns five of last season's top six scorers as it ranked in the conference's top four in scoring offense and defense, averaging 71.51 points while limiting opponents to 61.77 points per game.

  • ACU is on the heels of a run to the Super 16 round of the Women's National Invitation Tournament last season while earning its most victories, highest overall winning percentage and highest conference winning percentage since 2020.
