Davion Bailey Named Player of the Week After Boardwalk Battle

SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word men's basketball team traveled back to Daytona Beach, Florida for the Geico Boardwalk Battle where they split their games against Southern Indiana and High Point University.

Davion Bailey led the way through the weekend, averaging 27.5 points per game, knocking down nine 3-pointers, and shooting 49.5 percent from the field, on his way to being named to the Boardwalk Battle All-Tournament team and Southland Conference Player of the Week.

In the first game of the week the Cardinals took on the Southern Indiana Eagles. UIW started hot, making their first six shots from the field, getting out to a 15-8 lead. The Cardinals wouldn't trail for the remainder of the half as DB was scoring at will finishing the first 20 minutes with 14 points. The only other player to have a double-digit first half was the other Bailey, Cardell Bailey, who had 13 and kept things close. UIW held a slight 41-38 lead at the break.

In the second half the Cardinals dominated the Eagles. UIW had more rebounds and assists while shooting 10 percent better from the field. Tahj Staveskie joined the party scoring 12 in the second half, and Harld Wood nearly had a double-double with nine. points and eight rebounds to close out the game. In the end the Cardinals walked away with an 87-81 victory, moving to the championship game.

In the championship game against High Point most of the first half belonged to the Cardinals once again. Davion led all scorers with 16 in the half and Jordan Pyke joined him with 10. However, poor rebounding and a cold streak in the final five minutes sent UIW into halftime trailing by six, 40-46.

In the second half HPU exploded on offense shooting better than 60 percent from the field. Bailey was able to keep the Cardinals in the game, tying his career high for 3-pointers with seven, finishing the game with 30 points. It wasn't enough to push get UIW past High Point and the Cardinals fell by a final score of 80-91.
