SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word men's basketball program announced the addition of two championship-caliber coaches in Tony Barbee and Dave Wojcik to its staff under the leadership of third-year head coach Shane Heirman.
Each brings a unique set of skills that align with the program's goals and vision under Coach Heirman. Both have deep ties to Heirman, with Barbee having hired him to his inaugural Central Michigan staff in 2021 and Wojcik recruiting and coaching him as a player at Tulsa.
Tony Barbee joins the Cardinals as an assistant coach after previously serving as the head coach at Central Michigan University. One of the most decorated coaches in the sport, Barbee brings more than thirty years of coaching experience, including head coaching stints at CMU, Auburn, and UTEP.
He is known as one of the top basketball minds in the country and has a long track record of developing elite talent. He is a two-time conference Coach of the Year recipient, once in the MAC with CMU and previously in C-USA with UTEP.
In addition to his success as a head coach, Barbee worked for seven years at Kentucky as Associate Head Coach under John Calipari. During his time in Lexington, Barbee helped recruit and develop 30 NBA players, including eight future NBA All-Stars, 2025 NBA MVP, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and San Antonio Spurs star, De'Aaron Fox.
"I cannot overstate my excitement in announcing Tony Barbee as a new addition to our staff at UIW," said Coach Heirman
. "Tony brings a wealth of experience from an incredible career as both a head coach and assistant coach, and his impact on our program will be immediate and profound. When you're able to attract someone with Tony's résumé to UIW, it speaks volumes about the vision of this program and his belief in what we're building here."
Dave Wojcik enters his first season at UIW as an assistant coach, bringing over 35 years of experience at some of the nation's top basketball programs. He has served as an assistant at Xavier, Wake Forest, Dayton, Tulsa, and Boise State, working under some of the best coaches in college basketball. Wojcik also held the position of head coach at San Jose State from 2013 to 2017, where he demonstrated his ability to lead, develop talent, and build a competitive program.
Renowned for his work ethic, mentorship, and passion for the game, Wojcik has a proven track record of recruiting and developing elite-level players. Throughout his career, he has played a key role in the development of nine NBA players, including first-round picks Al-Farouq Aminu and Brandon Clarke. His extensive experience, dedication to player growth, and deep understanding of the game make him an invaluable asset to the UIW basketball program.
"I am incredibly proud to announce the addition of Dave Wojcik to our staff at UIW," Heirman said
. "Quite candidly, I would not have a career in this profession if Dave hadn't taken a chance on me years ago at the University of Tulsa. Having the opportunity to now work alongside him is truly special. Dave brings a wealth of experience, including Division I head coaching success and a long track record of developing winning programs. His impact on our team and culture will be immediate and deeply positive."
The Cardinals open the 2025–26 season on November 3 in Fort Collins, Colorado, against NCAA Tournament team Colorado State. Season tickets are on sale now and can be purchased at
