Volleyball Surges Late to Seal Comeback Win

SAN ANTONIO, TX – The University of the Incarnate Word volleyball team rallied from two sets down to defeat Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (TAMCC) on Saturday afternoon at the McDermott Center. 

Set 1: UIW 19 (0), TAMCC 25 (1)       

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi controlled much of the opening set, closing on a 6-0 run to take a 1-0 lead. Early in the frame, senior outside hitter Finley Evans notched her 700th career kill. 

   

Set 2: UIW 22 (0), TAMCC 25 (2)      

The Islanders once again controlled the tempo in the second set, building a seven-point lead. Although UIW tied things up at 22-22, the Islanders closed the frame on a 3-0 run to take the set.

   

Set 3: UIW 25 (1), TAMCC 15 (2)      

The Red and Black dominated the third frame to keep the match alive. UIW built a lead as large as 10 points, and a kill from senior Kyla Malone sealed the set to force a fourth. Evans led all players with four kills in the set. 

Set 4: UIW 25 (2), TAMCC 20 (2)      

The Cardinals and Islanders traded points early in the fourth set before UIW strung together back-to-back points to reach set point at 24-19. Malone once again delivered the decisive kill to send the match to a fifth set. Her sixth and final kill of the frame led all players in the set. 

Set 5: UIW 15 (3), TAMCC 12 (2)      

The Cardinals never trailed in the decisive fifth set, completing the reverse sweep of the Islanders. Evans capped her milestone afternoon with the match-winning kill to secure the victory for UIW. 

Finley Evans led all players with 22 kills on the afternoon, while Calissa Allison paced the Red and Black with 35 assists and 17 digs. At the net, Vanessa Eregie anchored the defense with a match-high five blocks. 

UIW hits the road next week for a pair of conference matchups, visiting Lamar on Thursday evening before taking on league-leading Stephen F. Austin on Saturday afternoon.
