SAN ANTONIO - The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team is set for two conference games this weekend. The first will be at McNeese on Thursday, January 30th at 6 p.m. and the next will be at 1 p.m. at home against HCU on Saturday, February 1st.
UIW
The Cardinals head into Thursday sitting in fifth in the Southland Conference (SLC) standings with a record of 6-4 and an overall record of 11-8 after splitting a pair of contests on the road last week.
UIW's defense continues to cause problems for the opposition, forcing 10.53 steals a game, the third highest in the SLC. The Cardinals are also creating issues for teams behind the line, holding opponents to the second lowest 3-point shooting percentage in the SLC (27.2%).
Junior Jorja Elliott continues to lead the Cardinals in scoring with 9.9 points a game.
Freshman Brynn Lusby has been a strong asset off the bench and is second on the team in points scoring 8.9 a game.
Forward Raimi McCrary has tallied 6.3 rebounds per game and has recorded 10-plus rebounds in four games this season, including two double-doubles.
THE LAST TIME THEY MET
UIW has won three straight over the Cowgirls with Mcneese's last win coming on January 26th, 2023. The Cardinals have won each of the last three games by double-digits.
The Cardinals have won four straight over HCU, including this season on January 11th where UIW took home a 76-45 decision in Houston. The Huskies last win over UIW came on January 19th, 2023.
SCOUTING THE COWGIRLS
McNeese sits in 8th in the SLC with a 3-6 record and an 8-12 record overall. The Cowgirls have been dominant on the boards, leading the SLC in rebounds per game with 41.1.
The Cowgirls have had success on the defensive end, particularly in the paint, blocking 3.65 shots per game and 73 on the season, both third in the SLC.
Sophomore Paris Guillory has only played in 11 games but leads the team in scoring averaging 15.5 points per game.
Kiayra Ellis is tied for first in the entire SLC in blocks as she has recorded 29 on the year and is averaging 1.6 a game.
SCOUTING THE HUSKIES
HCU is currently in 11th in the SLC with a 5-14 overall record and a 2-8 mark in conference play.
Sophomore guard Erin Maguire leads the Huskies averaging just under 10 points per game (9.9), while senior forward Tiffany Tullis is second in the SLC bringing down 9.3 boards per game.
