SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball is set to host to UTRGV and visit Texas A&M Corpus Christi in two conference matchups. On Thursday, January 16 the Vaqueros and Cardinals tip off at 6:30 p.m. and on Saturday, January 18 the Islanders visit UIW at 1:00 p.m.
UIW
The Cardinals sit in seventh place in the league standings with a 3-3 record after splitting last week's matchups with a win at HCU and a loss to Nicholls at home.
UIW is fifth in the conference with its 33 percent 3-point shooting, knocking down 74 as a team this season.
Jorja Elliott continues to lead the Cardinals in scoring, averaging 10.2 points per contest, scoring in double figures for eight games with a season-high 22 points against Northwestern State to earn herself SLC Player of the Week.
Freshman Brynn Lusby comes off the bench as the second leading scorer, adding 9.3 points per contest.
Forward Raimi McCrary is the leading rebounder, pulling down 6.3 per game. She's tallied 10-plus rebounds in four games this season, including two double-doubles.
THE LAST TIME THEY MET
The Cardinals defeated the Vaqueros the last time they faced off. The win was UIW's first win over UTRGV in program history. The win came last November in the McDermott Center.
The Cardinals are currently on an 11-game losing streak against the Islanders dating back to 2020.
SCOUTING THE VAQUEROS
UTRGV enters the contest on a three-game winning streak after defeating ETAMU and TAMCC last week. The Vaqueros are currently 9-8 (4-2) and sit in fourth place in the conference standings.
Kade Hackerott leads the Vaqueros in points averaging 13.6 per game.
Hackerott also leads UTRGV in steals and assists. She's totaled 50 assists and 21 steals so far this season.
Charlotte O'Keefe is averaging a team high 11.2 rebounds per game and 1.3 blocks per game to lead the defense.
SCOUTING THE ISLANDERS
The Islanders have dropped its last three conference games after losing to NWST and UTRGV last week in conference play.
TAMCC sits in ninth place in the conference standings following last week's losses.
Mireia Aguado leads the team in scoring, averaging 11.6 per game. Aguado also leads the team in assists, averaging 3.6 per game.
Paige Allen leads the team in rebounds, tallying 8.2 per game. Allen also averages 2.6 steals per game to lead the Islanders.
