SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team suffered its third consecutive Southland Conference loss of the season against Nicholls, on Thursday night.
The Cardinals leading scorer of the season continued to shine as Jorja Elliott led the team in points with 14. Off the bench, Destiny Whitaker put up ten points shooting 60% from the field.
UIW and Nicholls played a close first quarter with the Cardinals leading at the end of one 13-12. Both teams came out hot shooting over 50% from the field in the opening quarter
In the second quarter both teams struggled shooting the ball. Nicholls went 4-13 from the court, while UIW finished 4-12. The Cardinals did shoot 50% from beyond the arc in the quarter, however the Colonels headed into the break with a slim 28-27 lead.
Nicholls came out in the third quarter a much scrappier team, attacking the basket hard and draining threes consistently. The Colonels had its most productive quarter in the third putting up 21 points, while shooting 64% from the field and 63% from three-point land. The Cardinals offense failed to convert a three-pointer in the quarter and fell behind 49-41.
The Cardinals had their most productive quarter in the final ten minutes of the night, point wise, putting up 16 points in the final frame. Nicholls continued to shoot at a high clip shooting 42% from the field and 67% from beyond the arc. The Colonels pulled away late, winning with a final score of 68-57.
UIW is back in action in Houston on Saturday to take on HCU at 1:00 p.m.
