SAN ANTONIO - The University of the Incarnate Word women's soccer team will begin Southland (SLC) Conference play this weekend at home with Southeastern Louisiana on Friday, September 27th at 7 p.m. On Sunday, the Cardinals will host Northwestern State at 12 pm. 

UIW 

• The Cardinals are 3-3-2 following their biggest win of the season in a 1-0 upset win over Grand Canyon (GCU) on September 19th. 

• UIW was picked to finish 10th in the Southland Conference preseason poll following a 3-6-1 2023 campaign where they finished eighth.  

• Junior Sinead Duffy was named the SLC Offensive Player of the Week last week after scoring the game-winner against GCU.  

• Sophomore Alex Knutson leads UIW in scoring with two goals and goalkeeper Erica Defferding has recorded 41 saves in seven starts.  

Scouting the Lady Lions 

• SLU is 2-4-1 on the season and 1-0 in Southland play after a 1-0 win over McNeese.  

• Kelsey Fuller and Hannah McCord lead the Lady Lions in goals scored with two apiece. 

• Kendall Curran has handled the majority of time in goal and has posted 16 saves in five starts. 

Scouting the Demons 

• NSU is 5-4-1 and 1-0 in conference play after blanking Nicholls 2-0. 

• The Demons come into the weekend riding a five-game winning streak and have scored 16 goals on the year. 

• Isabella Ruggiano leads the team in points with eight and has three goals and two assists on the year. Goalkeeper Libe Banuelos leads has 42 saves in nine starts and has won SLC goalkeeper of the week twice this season.  

Friday will also be Red Out Student Appreciation Night and the first 50 students in attendance get a free shirt. Smoothie King and Jimmy Johns will also be present providing sandwiches and free smoothie samples.
