SAN ANTONIO -The University of the Incarnate Word women's soccer team defeated UTEP 1-0 at Gayle & Tom Benson Stadium Thursday evening.
In the first half, play was pretty even between the two sides. Shot counts were equal at five a piece and neither team could generate any quality chances as the score was 0-0 at the break.
In the second half, UTEP turned up the pressure, recording nine shots but none were too troubling for UIW's sophomore goalkeeper Erica Defferding, who finished the contest with three saves. The Cardinals also began to turn up the pressure, earning a corner kick in the 52nd.
After UTEP initially cleared the cross, sophomore Alex Knutson hit a right-footed shot off a bounce that sailed over the Miner goalkeeper into the top-right corner. The goal was the eventual game-winner and was her second of the season.
The Cardinals were able to hang on for the victory and improved to 2-3-2 on the year. UIW returns to action on the road on Thursday, September 19th at Grand Canyon.
