Box Score SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word football team picked up a win in its first game of the season, defeating the University of Northern Colorado (UNC) 28-7 on Saturday night.
Zach Calzada threw for more than 200 yards for two touchdowns, 103 of those yards and one TD went to
Jalen Walthall.
Dekalon Taylor and
Isaiah Robinson split the workload on the ground rushing for 81 and 82 yards respectfully.
The Cardinals came out strong scoring quickly in only five plays. The drive was capped off by a 27-yard rush for a touchdown by Taylor. UIW kept the pressure on UNC and on the next drive
Mister Williams caught an interception giving the Cardinal offense the ball back.
UNC responded the next time out with a five-play drive to tie up the game, 7-7.
The Cardinals and Bears went back and forth, neither one gaining the edge until the final minutes of the first half when Calzada found Walthall streaking down the field for a 46-yard touchdown; breaking the tie and sending UIW into the break up, 14-7.
Coming out of the locker room the Cardinals took over, dominating in all three phases of the game. UIW forced a turnover on the first kickoff of the half, scoring on the first drive, and getting off the field in just three plays.
Taylor found his way into the end zone once again stretching the Cardinal lead to 28-7. UIW was able to control the clock and keep the Bears off the board for the remainder of the game earning the first win of the season.
